Our featured artist, Leslie Johnson grew up in Kailua, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. “Forced” into the world of art from the time she could chew on a pain
tbrush… Leslie comes from a long line of accomplished family artisans. Her mother, artist Barbara Jackson, was an art professor at the University of Hawaii and is a very successful artist to date. Leslie remembers being traumatized by the fact that while most families visited Disneyland for family vacations, she was dragged to art openings and museums from California to New York. Summers were spent at “Art School” and of course, traveling to galleries and more museums.
Leslie’s studies include courses at Honolulu Art Academy, San Francisco de Young Museum and art classes while obtaining her college degree from San Francisco State University in California.
Having grown up in Hawaii, Leslie developed a passion for the outdoors, the ocean and tropical environments, particularly gardens and flowers. Nature and flowers are the inspiration for her photographs; which in turn become the subjects of her paintings. Although her full time work is in the wine business, her artistic pursuits include watercolor, acrylic painting and collage.
Leslie is an avid gardener and enjoys living in Sausalito with her husband cultivating their hillside and terraced gardens.
